What's happening?
The Berowra Waters to Cowan section of the Great North Walk (GNW) is a very popular walking track for locals and tourists. The track has become degraded over many years of use and is beyond general maintenance activities. There has also been concerns raised by the public for the trails’ condition in recent years.
The aim of the works is to undertake upgrades along the GNW between Berowra Waters and Cowan and formalise the Alston Drive to GNW 'feeder track'. Whilst the majority of proposed upgrades is on Council managed land, some sections are on Muogamarra Nature Reserve and Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC) land which requires further conditions and approval to be resolved.
The GNW trail between Berowra Waters and Glendale Road, Cowan has been split into six sections to make management of works easier.
Council has been working with Soil Conservation Services to determine the scope of work required to upgrade sections of the GNW in this area to improve visitor experience and reduce environmental impacts.
At this stage the primary scope of work for upgrades is focused on Section 5 & Section 6 including:
- Sandstone steps
- Directional markers and track head signage
- Track alignment adjustments (Section 6)
- Vegetation and drainage management
Upgrades to remaining sections (starting with Section 4) would be undertaken pending future funding and approvals.
Works are anticipated to be undertaken between October 2022 to March 2023.
